MMANewsdesk.com will bring you live coverage tonight of the Frank Shamrock vs Phil Baroni fight, as our own Arturo Collozo Jr. is at the HP Pavilion right now and will file live reports from the show. Strikeforce promoter Scot Coker, who forced the Pro Elite promotion to broadcast this event on ppv, has made a major move pushing his promotion into the spotlight, and if Shamrock vs Baroni is half the war people are expecting it to be, it will overshadow the Shamrock vs Renzo Gracie debacle on Showtime earlier this year. Plus, expect an enormous amount of support for Cung Le, the local favorite, as there is a huge Vietnamese community in the San Jose area, and the 34 year old fighter could come out of tonight's show a major force in the MMA world simply based on the amazing reaction he is expected to receive. Congratulations to Coker, who is showing his old bosses at K-1 how it should be, instead of the horrible job done at the Los Angeles Coliseum for the K-1 Dynamite show. Arturo is predicting over 10,000 fans tonight, which is amazing considering Strikeforce has no local television outlet.
Zuffa is gearing up for the series of Super Bowl type fights between UFC and Pride champions, the 1st one being the showdown between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson (formerly of Pride, now the UFC Light Heavyweight Champion) against Pride Double Champion Dan Henderson on September 8th in London.
Lance Pugmire of The Los Angeles Times reported on the 1st Title vs Title match with this report:
In the fight being called Part 1 of the Ultimate Fighting Championship's so-called super bowl series against its recently purchased PRIDE Fighting Championship, UFC light-heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson will fight PRIDE middleweight champion Dan Henderson Sept. 8 in London with the winner taking both organizations' belts.
Since Jackson resides in Irvine and Henderson in Temecula, the natural location for their September clash would be Anaheim, which will also have a September UFC event at the Honda Center on Sept. 22.
Instead, UFC UK officials announced the UFC 75 card following Saturday's middleweight victory in UFC 72 by former champion Rich Franklin in Belfast, Ireland.
In February, Henderson, 36, added PRIDE's middleweight belt to his welterweight title when he recorded a stunning knockout of Wanderlei Silva in Las Vegas.
Jackson, 29, a former PRIDE fighter, dethroned popular UFC champion Chuck Liddell last month with a first-round knockout in Las Vegas. After the bout, Henderson was introduced to the crowd at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, and UFC President Dana White announced the first of an expected series of super fights pitting the top fighters from the once rival organizations.
The London card will also include fights featuring heavyweight Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic, who was upset against Gabriel Gonzaga, and England's light-heavyweight Michael Bisping (13-0).
Gonzaga, who dropped Filipovic with a vicious right leg kick at UFC 70, will fight for the UFC heavyweight title against veteran champion Randy Couture, 42, on Aug. 25 in Las Vegas, a UFC official confirmed Wednesday. The UFC 74 card will be fought at Mandalay Bay Events Center.
Meanwhile, UFC 76 in Anaheim has not yet finalized its main event. The date seemed ideal for Liddell, who has returned to training in San Luis Obispo after his streak of seven consecutive knockouts ended against Jackson.
"I'd love to [fight in Anaheim] but last I talked to Dana, he said October or November," Liddell said in a Wednesday e-mail. "I want to fight again soon."
